Disney's Muppet Movie - News, Rumors, Cast, etc

I know it's been talked about in the FSM threads or any thread re: Jason Segel.

January 29, 2010
'Flight of the Conchords' co-creator will direct Disney's Muppet movie
"Flight of the Conchords" co-creator James Bobin has decided it's time to sing the music and it’s time to light the lights, signing on to direct Disney’s new Muppet movie.

The project, being overseen by senior exec Kristin Burr, had been a priority of the former Dick Cook/Oren Aviv Disney administration and the new toppers Rich Ross and Sean Bailey continued to push it forward.

The Muppet movie follows their goal of creating more branded entertainment under the Disney banner. Bobin’s name emerged as the lead choice after “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were on track to directed but abruptly did a detour, inking a deal to helm “21 Jump Street” at Sony instead. As reported by New York Magazine, Bobin faced a choice of directing Muppets or a Judd Apatow comedy titled “Bridesmaids” at Universal. Bobin made the decision to throw his lot with Kermit and Miss Piggy late Thursday night.

Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller wrote the new Muppet project. Segel is described as a “Muppet freak” by those close to him, with paraphernalia from the Jim Henson show all over his pad. Plot details are being kept secret, but Bobin is expected to bring a musical sensibility to the project, which is being produced by Mandeville’s David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman.

In addition to “Conchords,” CAA-repped Bobin was a writer on “Da Ali G Show” and has the comedy “Moon People” set up at Sony.

There was a script review out earlier last year, sounded positive.

It's the Muppets, man. I don't think they'd CG it up to the standard that you may think.

I'd expect wire removal but I doubt we'd see CG Muppets.

Re: Disney's Muppet Movie - News, Rumors, Cast, etc

there will be no cg. i doubt jason segal would let that happen. plus if you've seen any of the recent stuff the muppets have been posting on their youtube channel you'd know they plan on keeping it old school.

<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tgbNymZ7vqY&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tgbNymZ7vqY&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

...and just because he's involved:

I'm sincerely hoping that Craig Ferguson has at least a cameo appearance in this. He's done as much to keep puppets in vogue as anyone else the last five years!

I've read the draft from 10/30/209. It's a winner, at least on paper.

That's a great show. I love the integration of the movie with the "live" elements.

not only was the 3D amazing but another technical plus was that special 70mm cameras were constructed and shot the feature to make it truly spectacular. Is the Muppet 3D film still featured at the Disney/MGM park?

and to go off topic for a sec, what's at the Epcot theatre that featured 'Captain EO' and 'Honey I Shrunk the Audience!'

The basic plot:

Spoiler:
It is years later. These "kids" go to LA for a tour of the old Muppet Studios, that is now a paper factory and is really boring now. They see Kermit's old office and it's dusty and full of cobwebs. The kids hide and see Statler and Waldorf giving a tour to a Texas businessman that they're selling the old studios to. There is a clause in the contract that the only way the sell can be stopped is if the Muppets all happen to come back and put on a show that gets ten million viewers, and it must happen within two weeks or else the sale will be final. The businessman is actually secretly evil and only wants the studio because he found out that there is a ton of oil underground there and wants to destroy it all to get to it.

The "kids" were hiding and heard all about what is actually going on, so they decide to go and talk to Kermit at his mansion to let him know what is going on and what needs to be done to save the studios. So Kermit sounds an emergency alarm to alert all of the Muppets that they need to come together once again to put on a big show to save the day.

That's about the first 15 minutes or so of the script that gets the ball rolling.
