Any interest for Avatar:Special Edition?

Well, the Most Popular Movie EVER is back in 1,000 or so theaters tomorrow. The main selling point is that it has eight new minutes of footage added on. Plus, it will be in 3D only.
I wonder, does anyone plan on seeing this? Personally, I'm Avatar-ed out. I saw the film once in 2009, and for a second time in 2010. Also, I saw it again on dvd several months ago. So, my interest in seeing this yet again is pretty low.

I would see this again, but it is not in IMAX in my area. There are multiple 3D screens in which it is playing, but if I were to shell out any more cash for the flick, it would need to be in IMAX.

Also, I think I read that the November home release would include a longer Special Edition, 22 minutes if I remember correctly.

Meh, prob not. I might go see it in IMAX if anyone I know asks me, but that's unlikely.

Not sure if I'd want to sit in the theater again, but a home version might get me to bite, but it would have to be more like the extra 22 minutes rather than just 8.

Only if in this version the marines send nukes down from orbit, destroying the Navi and that tree of life. Then go in and mine the unobtainium.

Re: Any interest for Avatar:Special Edition?

yeah sure.

annoyed that the AMC Tysons IMAX is not booking this, but I have to trek out to AMC Hoffman which is better in a way since it's more accesible by Metro than Tysons is.

I've seen Avatar once. I'll wait until the SE is released on Blu-ray, and I'll probably just rent it.

Re: Any interest for Avatar:Special Edition?

what's odd is that the Special Edition theatrical version is only 8 minutes longer, but the SE of the bluray is 16 minutes longer.... wtf?

Re: Any interest for Avatar:Special Edition?

Giles, this was done because they could only fit 8 more minutes of footage on the IMAX platters. I should know, I'm running it as I type this, and I don't like how close to the edge of the platter the print is.

Re: Any interest for Avatar:Special Edition?

None of the new footage is spent on fleshing out any of the characters or story out. Not even a shot of what the Earth of the future looks like. It's just a couple of new beasties and some new flying creature. I'll pass.

that maybe the case for IMAX/70mm but not for IMAX-Digital presentations, but I can see why it was done, since to do two different 'expanded editions' depending on the theatre's setup would be more than a hassle.

I also think, aside from your point, IMAX is loathe to release a product that is demonstrably different in digital versus 70mm (aspect ratio differences in The Dark Knight notwithstanding). Otherwise the credits for Watchmen could have been longer in digital.

And finally, I think Fox/Cameron are purposefully holding back some of the footage just to make the home video release more attractive to people who already bought the previous edition and/or saw the theatrical re-release.

Re: Any interest for Avatar:Special Edition?

I think the only people this will interest are the ones who somehow missed it in the theater the first time around and have been kicking themselves ever since cause they missed the 3D "event"...and the nutjobs who have considered suicide so they could live on pandora as a Na'vi for all eternity.

I'm waiting for the special edition blu-ray myself.
