John Hughes or Cameron Crowe
Music play heavily into both directors' films, and neither directed a film written by another writer. While both wrote and directed strong teenaged characters, they each were able to break out of the High School mold and make a film with living, breathing adult characters (Jerry Maguire vs. Planes, Trains and Automobiles).
As much as I love Almost Famous, John Hughes gets my vote for creating characters that you could feel living and breathing.

I love Almost Famous and Vanilla Sky but have little use for Crowe's other films. I vote for Hughes. A stronger overall body of work.

Re: John Hughes or Cameron Crowe
This one was VERY difficult for me to answer. In fact -- my answer kind of makes me hurt a little. As much as I LOVE John Hughes films, I went with Cameron Crowe who created one of my Top 5 of all time favorites: Almost Famous. It was one of the movies that made me fall in love with film and I truly connect to it more so than most any other film I have seen. Both are great masters, but I have more of a personal connection to Crowe.
