Sergio Leone or Sam Peckinpah

OK, I thought I was done, but I'm not!

The two most celebrated revisionist western directors. Discuss.

Re: Sergio Leone or Sam Peckinpah

And here I am listening to the Good, the bad and the Ugly soundtrack when I came across this thread. Leone all the way on this one. Sorry Sam.

Tarantino, Leone stole his music from him.

Re: Sergio Leone or Sam Peckinpah

Leone....solely for Once Upon A Time In The West. That film is one of the best films ever..and possibly the best western as well. Of course there's his Dollars trilogy and Once Upon A Time in America (when the fuck is his daughter going to talk about the longer cut they were releasing, the one Leone liked the most. The Collosus of Rhodes...I've yet to see.

Peckinpah...while still being great...kinda got iffy there at the end of his life.

Re: Sergio Leone or Sam Peckinpah

This is actually a really difficult one for me. Leone's movies are more entertaining, but Peckinpah's are more contemplative and ultimately have more to say. I think I could flip flop on these two for the rest of my life and not pick one or the other.

Leone on the strength of Duck, You Sucker alone. Amazing film, not to mention my favorite western. I think the Morricone score is his best as well.

Re: Sergio Leone or Sam Peckinpah

Despite the fact that I think both are singular directors and can't rightfully choose one over the other, I'm voting for Peckinpah just because he's down on votes at the moment.

The Wild Bunch >>>> almost every movie ever made

TGTB&TU is right up there next to it (but not as good). And I like "Ride The High Country" better than every other Leone film I've seen -- and I've liked almost all of them.

For the smile during the rape scene in "Straw Dogs", I'm going with Peckinpah.

Re: Sergio Leone or Sam Peckinpah

Am I the only who thinks that both For A Few Dollars More and Once Upon A Time In The West are better than The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly?

Very tough call, but Peckinpah made Convoy so my vote goes to Leone.

The Dollars Trilogy is certainly better than the Star Wars trilogy.
