Re: John Ford or John Huston?

Man this is a tougher poll than most of the others since both were TOTALLY on that wavelength of greatness buuut i guess i'll go with John Huston for his amazingly specatcular Bogie pictures and i havent even seen Man Who Would be King ffs! But Ford's young Lincoln/Fonda movie was awesome and i now want to suscribe to Lincoln's newsletter.

Re: John Ford or John Huston?

I'm going to take this opportunity to admit something: I think John Ford is overrated. Yes, he's made some great films, specifically The Searchers, but so many of his westerns blend together. I'm already not a huge fan of the kind of westerns he made (I much prefer the revisionist westerns of Leone and Peckinpah), and the fact that he did so many make them all blend together in my mind.

John Huston, on the other hand, is absolutely brilliant. The Maltese Falcon is, along with Double Indemnity, the representative film noir, and then you've got The Treasure of Sierra Madre, Key Largo, The Asphalt Jungle, The Red Badge of Courage, The African Queen, The Misfits, The Night of the Iguana, The Man Who Would Be King, and Prizzi's Honor. And he's the heavy in Chinatown. Can't be beat.

Re: John Ford or John Huston?

^i know what you mean, even though Ford was the biggest idol to Leone (either him or Lean) But i agree Ford made a zillion westerns but Hawks/Huston who made fewer actually made the better.

Yeah, Searchers aside, I'd take Hawks' westerns over Ford's. Ford's non-western work is better, but I still don't adore the man the way many do.

John Ford directed The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. John Ford gets my vote.
