Scorsese is the better filmmaker, Spielberg's movies are much more fun.

I'll go Spielberg since he's been involved with so many personal favorites...Jaws, the Indiana Jones films, Back to the Future.

heh

I was simply reacting to the statement that Spielberg's movies "are much more fun". Therefore, apparently, they aren't as worthwhile.

Re: Spielberg or Scorsese?

Not voting, but I'll tell you this: I appreciate that Scorsese is willing to do commentary tracks for his movies. It wouldn't bother me so much that Spielberg doesn't, except for all the boasting he did in his interview for Lawrence of Arabia talking about how exciting it was for him to sit next to Sir David Lean during a private screening of the movie and get a live, one-on-one commentary from Sir David throughout. Don't tell me you've gotten such a once-in-a-lifetime experience and loved it, and can't be bothered to record something for your fans!

Re: Spielberg or Scorsese?

Scorsese.

I love several of Spielberg's films but he did not direct Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or Goodfellas.

Re: Spielberg or Scorsese?

Both are iconic filmmakers, and both changed the film industry. Spielberg, along with Lucas, helped turn the tide against the personal and complex films being made by people like Scorsese. Scorsese, aside from being a great filmmaker, was instrumental in popularizing the idea of properly archiving and restoring films.

Spielberg, in my mind, is best when he's doing a thriller or an adventure. Jaws, Indiana Jones, Minority Report, Jurassic Park all play to his strengths at manipulating an audience. These techniques usually fall flat when applied to drama, and consequently, a lot of his movies are overrated. Furthermore, his continued use of the long in the tooth John Williams continues to be a weak spot. However, when he's on (such as in the aforementioned films), he's the best at what he does.

Scorsese is a living legend of film. Always busy, always creative, he's made some of the best films of the past 40 years. Even his failures are interesting. Scorsese all the way, without a doubt. Even Spielberg's best film couldn't touch Goodfellas.

OP here...yeah that about sums it up for me.

Though I would put

Jaws
Munich
CETK
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Schindler's List

on the next rung....followed by:

The King of Comedy
Casino
Duel
Saving Private Ryan
Minority Report

It's a very close match up...but Scorsese wins based on the big three.

Re: Spielberg or Scorsese?

Spielberg has directed many more "crap" films in my opinion. (Hook, Always, 1941, Crystal Skull.) Even his big hits such as Jurassic Park, E.T. Close Encounters suffer from being too "cute" for my tastes.)

I like Scorsese's more gritty style and even his lesser films have portions that I admire.

Obviously you aren't familiar with some of Spielberg's best films. I take it you haven't yet seen ET: the Extra Terresatrial, The Sugarland Express, Close Encountters of the Third Kind, Duel, Empire of the Sun, or AI: Artificial Intelligence.

Re: Spielberg or Scorsese?

I have unfortunately seen ET, Close Encounters, Empire of the Sun, and AI. I like Sugarland and Duel, but not enough to call them Spielberg's best. I would count ET and Close Encounters among his worst, though.

Mod Note: Eva, I know you are new here, but before you signed up you had to agree to our terms and conditions, which includes no personal attacks. Further, you may want to learn the structure of the site, as while personal attacks are not allowed against anyone, it is especially poor form to level them against moderators.
