Val Kilmer says it is something we should look forward to. In an interview with Interview Magazine, he says, "It's a Halloween extravaganza. There're dogs and vampires. I play a writer who's something like [author] Mario Puzo, or at least how Francis describes Puzo's experience where he wrote THE GODFATHER while he was waiting for inspiration for his masterpiece. My character is a guy who tossed off this book about witches, and it became a big deal, and now he's known as doing these silly witch books and he's on hard times now looking for inspiration."

Kind of a shameless self-promotion for this thread bump, but I was at C2E2 the weekend before last and there was an hour long Q&A with Val Kilmer in which he discussed several of his movies. I wrote about it for Flickchart.

I can tell you, that hour was hilarious. He complained a few times that he really wants to do a comedy but that he can't get those kinds of roles. I've attended several conventions over the years and I have to say, I have rarely seen anyone as demonstrably comfortable, friendly or funny as was Val Kilmer. He did mention that he's working on a short film with Jack Black and Will Forte to tie in with his one man play based on Mark Twain. A couple of times, he recited some lines of Twain's in character (sounding like a caricature of his Doc Holliday voice to me). It's something that he clearly loves and I'm excited about that short film, whenever it may emerge.

He used to get funny movie roles early on.



I loved him in Willow and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Both times he showed really good comedy chops.

He was great in MacGruber, too.

That's cool. I would have thought he was a wack job like Gary Busey based on his press over the last two decades.

The Internet has taught us how some people just come across differently in text than in person and I really think that's the case with Val Kilmer. It's easy to isolate specific phrases and emphasize any given tone that the writer wishes to create and he's unfortunately the kind of guy who can provide those phrases thoughtlessly. He speaks very casually, almost like he's thinking aloud. I can see where he'd be easy bait for someone who walked into an interview expecting him to be a certain way.

What he's like off the clock, of course, I can't say but he could not have been nicer or friendlier. Most celebrities I've seen in these situations sort of go through their rehearsed repertoire of jokes; Kilmer instead ad-libbed his way through the whole thing, showing a great deal of comfort with us. I walked away (hobbled, really; my feets hurt!) very impressed.

That's true of most celebs I've been lucky enough to encounter/interview in the past. The problem with being in the public eye is you meet one group of people on a bad day (whether you're sick, going through personal issues, or just exhausted) and the bad feedback can be stuck with you for a lifetime.

He's clearly not good on talk shows. I think he does have a stream of consciousness thing going and I think he becomes very uncomfortable with the shallowness of most such interviews.

I don't blame him. I would hate going on talk shows and repeating pre-rehearsed stories and jokes worked out with the screener beforehand...not to mention having to answer such inane, boring questions. That's more the domain of stand-up comedians and stars more concerned with furthering their fame then engaging in thoughful discussions about their work or the business at large. Val Kilmer isn't Tom Cruise, afterall.

I watch a lot of bad low-budget movies, so I've seen plenty of Val Kilmer over the last several years. No matter how terrible a movie is, he is usually excellent. Does he have a rep for being difficult on the set?

Yet, funny enough, he has no problem with the shallowness of the movies he appears in.

Val Kilmer. Still awesome. I figured that he just doesn't like being in big movies. There's a subset of movie people like that. Including Francis Ford Coppola (who directed the upcoming Twixt). There's enough money to be made, that they get to do what they want and a modest scale.

Ten years ago this weekend, Val Kilmer turned in a great performance in the neo-noir THE SALTON SEA. It's not perfect - meth addicts hardly look this pretty - but Kilmer's lonely tweaker, investigating his wife's murder, is great to behold. The screenplay is twisty and often funny, and definitely makes the film worth a watch.

So somehow I knew this thread existed, but odd it’s so old. I could have swore it’s been on the front page of Movie talk, but turns out it’s been 8 years.

Anyway, interesting that this thread stopped receiving attention, and that was before his “cancer.”

Thought you might be interested in a recent NY Times article on him. He’s still working, but can’t speak really these days due to chemo and a tracheotomy. I also didn’t realize he’s so heavy into Christian Science. Sounds like if it wasn’t for his family, he wouldn’t have gone the surgery route.
