Sherwood BDP-5004 Multi-Region BD Player

FWIW the Sherwood BDP-5004 is confirmed here to be a multi-region capable BDP using the same "Momitsu" remote-codes.

Re: Sherwood BDP-5004 Multi-Region BD Player

I'm thrilled with mine. It's awfully loud at start up, but it's not noticeably louder than any of the other gear in my home theater once a movie is actually underway. Early on, I had difficulty getting a couple of discs to play, but these all spun fine eventually, and I haven't run into this issue since then. Once the player has started up, the load time for a disc is impressive fast as well. I've put quite a few region B Blu-ray discs in it, and I haven't had any hiccups or concerns at all. Absolutely worth the $170 I paid for it, and it looks like the price has already eased back another $20 or so. Very highly recommended.

All your Pal and Ntsc dvds look better on it as well?

Do letterboxed non anamorphic dvds usually look better on a Blu ray player than on a dvd player?

$164.20 shipped at the moment - with the Ozu Blu-rays coming in April, I may have to pick this up.

Aight, I ordered the Sherwood blu-ray from YOUR ELECTRONICS WAREHOUSE for a total of $150. It says it's on order and may take 2-3 weeks for delivery....Has anyone else ordered from this store and are they reliable?

Not a ton of reviews but the ones that are there are all mostly very positive -

No streaming. It is BD Live 2.0 profile though.

Also does not play AVCHD discs for those who use that capability.

yup, yup...I'm mainly curious to see how my regular dvds look on it. If my Sony HDTV is capable of only 1080i, how am I going to be watching DVDs and blu rays? 720 p? And can I watch all my current DVDs using a HDMI cable if my tv is only capable of 1080i? Or should I stick with my component cables?

I was trying to figure out which blu-rays I would buy or replace and all I could think of is:

1. Jodhaa Akbaar (replacement for crappy dvd)
2. The Fall (movie made for Blu Ray)
3. Heat (replacement for crappy dvd)
4. Armegeddon (replacement for crappy dvd)
5. The New World (movie made for Blu Ray)
6. Army of Darkness (because it's tradition to buy this film over and over)

I had a 1080i Samsung 26" HDTV for 4 years before I upgraded last December. Once I bought an Oppo 970, I switched to an HDMI-DVI cable, so I could properly upscale my DVDs. I also bought an Oppo HDMI switcher, so that I could hook up my PS3 and Xbox through HDMI. I preferred the digital connection to component, but you should see which settings work best for you.

When you go to your setup menu, you will have the following options for "Resolution":
HDMI Auto
1080p
1080i
720p
480p/576p
480i/576i

I guess HDMI auto will do it for you. but play around and see what you like best.

Is streaming something that requires a hardware solution or a software solution?

Re: Sherwood BDP-5004 Multi-Region BD Player

I bought one from Ritz Camera thru Amazon and it worked for approximately 30 minutes before freezing up on me to the point where I couldn't do anything but send it to Sherwood for repairs or replacement.

My experience was all the more frustrating because I could only find one other mention of the problem online and it was in an Amazon review posted AFTER I had ordered it.

Essentially I was playing a Region 2 Blu-ray and had to stop it because of a phone call. The player sat in 'stop' mode for about an hour. When I came back to it, it refused to restart the disc and I had to power cycle the player to even get it to come back to life and eject the disc.

After that, it wouldn't properly power back. It had a "system start-up" message screen that wouldn't actually boot back up. The player never recovered and that was only the 2nd disc I had put in the machine.

I hope that I get a replacement player ASAP (it's been shipped back to them for about a week now) and that the new one does not exhibit any issues. I was so excited to have it and I ordered about 10 Blu-ray discs from Amazon UK to accompany it that are waiting to be watched!

Re: Sherwood BDP-5004 Multi-Region BD Player

I'm almost afraid to buy blu-rays before actually getting this player. I wouldn't be surprised if I jinxed myself by buying blu-rays first, then receiving a defective Blu ray player...

Ya, When I ordered my first blurays, I was waiting anxiously for my BD player to play them, and guess what, the player broke down just 1 day before receiving my first Blu discs in the mail... its funny to think about it now.

Re: Sherwood BDP-5004 Multi-Region BD Player

The first Momitsu I received was faulty. Audio didn't work and door would get stuck. I was able to get a replacement and haven't had any problems since.

Re: Sherwood BDP-5004 Multi-Region BD Player

Speaking of which, I bought a bunch of Region B BD's, and now it looks like shipment of my Sherwood has been delayed due to Amazon being run by a bunch of douchebags.

Re: Sherwood BDP-5004 Multi-Region BD Player

Since I already bought the Jodhaa Akbar Blu-ray a couple months ago (out of fear of it becoming out-of-print...and currently it's all ready hard to find), my official first 2 blu-rays thay I bought are:

INTO THE BLUE and POINT BREAK

Yeah, i think nature movies need to be upgraded to Blu. They were cheap at Best Buy. Im now looking for The Road Warrior, Heat, and The New World for cheap.

Re: Sherwood BDP-5004 Multi-Region BD Player

Concerning Sherwood BDP-5004 having a HDMI 1.3 output:

I have an HDTV that's only good for 1080i, should I get a HDMI 1.3 cable or just a regular standard HDMI cable?
